MIT, working in partnership with the Environmental Protection Agency, wanted to create an online resource to educate faculty and staff at American colleges in the handling, storage, use and disposal of environmentally hazardous materials. The challenges were many; chief among them were the difficulties of organizing so much material, and the spectrum of audience types, ranging from auto shop workers to PhDs in environmental science.
Myriad approached the problem through a process of rapid prototyping, creating structural schematics and interface studies to present to the project team and to sample audience members for feedback. Over the course of development the product evolved into a guided tour of the various areas of a campus through the eyes of a "guide" who would work or study in that area. Myriad also created character studies and the final illustrations for the guides.
The EVC has been an enormous success, far surpassing projected traffic and seeing visitors from around the world. It was recently awarded the Environmental Business Council's top award for environmental education. |
